PADI 5* Dive Resort | Pulau Weh, Sumatra

We are a professional Dutch-Indonesian dive operation and a PADI 5* Dive Resort at the northwestern tip of Indonesia, Sumatra.

Open since 1998, Lumba Lumba Diving Centre has become a meeting point on Gapang Beach, a hub of activity from where the diving starts and a friendly and welcoming place where you can feel at home.

Still an insiders secret and an off the beaten track location, Pulau Weh offers unspoiled and uncrowded divesites. Add our team’s dedication, experience, and love for the ocean and you’ll get unforgettable dives. From spectacular full-adrenaline dives to long, slow relaxed macro dives.

Check out how to get to us!

We dive all year round.

The landscapes on all sites are magnificent and diverse. The average visibility is 20+ meters, and often more than 30 meters, especially when diving deep. The water temperature is usually 28-29 degrees Celsius, with sometimes colder upwellings which bring extremely clear visibility of over 40 meters from the depths of the open ocean around Weh.

Lumba Lumba Diving Centre offers the full range of PADI 5* courses, from your very first dive up to your Divemaster Training. We are the premier and only PADI 5 Star Dive Resort on Sumatra. Our instructors are experienced and know the waters around Pulau Weh very well. Lumba Lumba’s international team offers courses in English and multiple other languages. We dive in small groups based on experience and ability level so that everyone gets the attention they deserve.

Life on Gapang Beach

Pulau Weh is a beautiful island on the most North-Western tip of Indonesia. It is an off the beaten track location and not overrun from tourists. We are located at Gapang Beach, which is a picturesque beach, surrounded by white sand and large overhanging trees; the ‘Gapang’ trees.

The small community of Gapang consists of a few Indonesian families with their restaurants and a souvenir shop right on the beach path. To get an idea how to get here, check flight and ferry schedules and have a look at our travel recommendation.

Our accommodation is purposely built for our divers (and non-diving roommates of course). The rooms are quite popular, so reservations are recommended.

With a great house reef in front of the diveshop and a couple of resident turtles living in the bay, it’s certainly a perfect place for snorkeling and long relaxed shore dives.

RAMADAN, IDUL FITRI & LEBARAN HOLIDAYS 2025

Ramadan, the Muslim fasting month, will take place from Saturday, 1 March, to Sunday, 30 March 2025. This is followed by the national Hari Raya Idul Fitri (Eid al-Fitr) and Lebaran holidays.

During Ramadan, Gapang Beach will be quieter and more intimate, with fewer day visitors. Food is still available locally, as the area is accustomed to foreign tourism. Two or three restaurants will remain open during the day for discreet orders, with delivery to the dive shop or your accommodation. Dining areas will open as usual in the evening.

Things to Note During Ramadan

Life in Aceh slows down during Ramadan, as most locals fast, and daytime public activity is limited. Restaurants outside international or Chinese hotels will be closed during the day. While travellers may eat, drink, or smoke, it’s respectful to do so discreetly to honour those fasting.

Hari Raya Idul Fitri

Hari Raya Idul Fitri is expected to fall on Monday, 31 March, and Tuesday, 1 April 2025 (dates subject to confirmation). On the first day, no diving or fishing is allowed in the Iboih and Gapang areas, and other parts of the island may extend this restriction for up to three days.

Our dive shop will be closed on the first day of Ramadan and both Hari Raya days (31 March and 1 April) to allow our local crew to celebrate these important family and religious events.

If you visit during this period, not to worry! Our western staff will be on hand to assist with check-ins and tours. Regular 3-boat dive schedules will resume on Wednesday, 2 April 2025.

Lebaran Travel Advisory

During the Lebaran holiday week, schools and offices across Indonesia close, leading to increased domestic travel. Flights, hotels, and ferries can get fully booked. Ferry services may run on adjusted schedules, with the first ferry on Idul Fitri likely starting at 14:00.

Plan ahead to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience during this festive season.
