Take a Flight

To Banda Aceh

Your options:

From elsewhere before the pandemic the most direct connection was flying to Kuala Lumpur, and then from KL to Banda Aceh. Depending on arrival times, you may have an overnight in a KL hotel or the airport.
 
At the moment you can choose to fly via Jakarta or Denpasar and then onwards to Banda Aceh.

Before the pandemic there were flights to Banda Aceh from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia) and Penang (Firefly and Malindo). The regulations can change quickly nowadays, so please check with a travel website or agency. 

  • From Kuala Lumpur to Banda Aceh:
    • Daily AirAsia flights, usually 2-3 times a day
  • From Banda Aceh to Kuala Lumpur:
    • Daily AirAsia flights, usually 2-3 times a day

    • Daily Firefly or Malindo flights in the morning
  • From Banda Aceh to Penang:

Before the pandemic there were international flights to Indonesia through Medan. Then connect to a domestic flight from Medan to Banda Aceh. Another option from Singapore was by ferry to Batam (Indonesia) and onwards with the domestic LION AIR flight from Batam to Banda Aceh with good connections to the ferries to Pulau Weh.

  • From Batam to Banda Aceh:

Before the pandemic it was also possible to enter Indonesia through Medan on Sumatra. There were a number of international flights flying in from Penang, Ipoh, Malaka and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) (Garuda, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, LionAir, Batavia Air, Air Asia and others), from Bangkok (Thailand) (Air Asia) and from Singapore (SilkAir, Jetstar Asia, Air Asia, Tiger Airways). It is still possible to come with an overnight bus from Medan directly to Banda Aceh (around 12 hours).

Some hints for your connection:

From Banda Aceh to Pulau Weh: If you arrive in Banda Aceh before 8:00 you can connect to the 10:00 express bahari ferry and be at Lumba Lumba by noon. If you arrive in Banda Aceh before 14:30 you can connect to the last 16:00 express bahari ferry and be at Lumba Lumba by evening. Everything later than arriving in Banda Aceh after 14:30 means an overnight stay in the city.

From Pulau Weh to Banda Aceh: It is not possible to connect to a flight before 11:00. This means you have to leave us the afternoon before and have an overnight stay in Banda Aceh. By taking a plane starting at 11:00 you can connect with the first 8:00 express bahari ferry.

VISA:

International visitors can get a Visa on Arrival for a maximum 30 days visit, which you can also get as a one time 30 days extendable visa.

Also there is the option of a so called Visit Visa which gives you 60 days and is four times for 30 days each extendable. You have to apply for a Visit Visa before entering Indonesia and you need a sponsor at the place where you want to stay and do the extensions. Jump on the Ferry

To Pulau Weh

It’s quite easy to take a taxi from the airport to the ferry harbour Ulee Lhue. If going directly, it’s a 35 minutes drive with a standard taxi.

Take a Taxi

To Gapang Beach

When you arrive in Balohan, the harbour on Pulau Weh, there are many cars and minibuses waiting for passengers.
 
  • For private taxis cost a minimum of Rp 180,000-200,000
  • shared taxi with others will cost Rp 50 – 60.000 per person for a car to take you directly to Lumba Lumba
  • There is also the option to take a becak (motorbike-taxi) to Gapang. Prices are negotiable but frequently cost Rp 100 – 120,000 for two people.
 
It is a 35 minutes drive over scenic roads with great seaviews, while passing villages and forests with monkeys along the way.
